Tutoring --- Evidence from CEPS

【Abstract】

Because the after-school tutoring is attached to the mainstream education, some researchers call it the shadow education. Based on data collected from 112 junior high schools in China, the paper uses the met hods of literature analysis and questionnaire investigation to analyze the scale, intensity, cost and its influencing factors of the after-school tutoring. Research shows that the scale of after-school tutoring is huge. The after-school tutoring intensity of the Ninth grade students is greater than the seventh grade’s. The after-school tutoring cost increases in proportion to the family economic status. Female has greater chance in taking after-school tutoring and their after-school tutoring intensity and cost are larger than male. The conclusion also holds true for those who have better academic performance and those whose faher receive higher education.
