To celebrate the 70th anniversary of establishment for the discipline of statistics in the Renmin University of China (RUC) and to promote the sustainable development of statistical education, seminar entitled “70 Years of Statistical Education in New China: Review and Prospect” was successfully held on October 24th, 2020 in Beijing.

The meeting consists of three stages. The first stage of the meeting was chaired by Dr. Xiaojun Wang, Dean of the School of Statistics at RUC.

Dr. Wei Liu, President of RUC, delivered a welcome speech and expressed his gratitude to the National Bureau of Statistics, the statistical community, for their support to the Renmin University of China for a long time.

Dr. Jizhe Ning, Vice Chairman of National Development and Reform Commission, Commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, congratulated the seminar’s opening and expressed his gratitude for the efforts people devoted to statistics.

Dr. Xuming He, President-Elect（2021-2023）of International Statistical Institute and Professor of Statistics at the University of Michigan, fully affirmed the achievements and exemplary role of the discipline of statistics at RUC.

Dr. Fang Yao, Director of the Statistical Science Center of Peking University, recalled that Peking University and Renmin University have been working together to promote the comprehensive and in-depth development of domestic statistical disciplines over the years. Traditional statistics is in urgent need of reform and integration into the era of big data, solving the major problems related to the national strategy, national economy and people`s livelihood.

At Last, Jizhe Ning, Zude Xian and Youfeng Mao (the Deputy Commissioners of the National Bureau of Statistics of China), Yuping Zeng (the Chief Statistician of the National Bureau of Statistics of China), Wei Liu, Wei Yuan (the First-Class Professor of the Renmin University of China), Jianhua Guo (the Chairman of Office of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee), Xiangzhong Fang (the Chairman of Steering Committee for Guidance in Teaching in Higher Education Institutions in Statistics) jointly launched the Five Departments of Statistics of the Renmin University of China.

The second stage of the seminar was chaired by Shengwang Meng, Chairman of the School Council for the School of Statistics at RUC.

Dr. Wei Yuan, First-Class Professor of the Renmin University of China, gave a talk on Chronicle of Statistics over the Past 70 Years in New China, comprehensively reviewed the development process of the discipline of statistics in China from 1950.

Dr. Jianhua Guo, Chairman of Office of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, gave a talk on The Development of Statistics in the Era of Big Data.

Dr. Xiangzhong Fang, Chairman of Steering Committee for Guidance in Teaching in Higher Education Institutions in Statistics, gave a talk on Review and Prospect for Undergraduate Education in Statistics.

Dr. Yanyun Zhao, Secretary General of National Mas Education Steering Committee, gave a talk on Cultivating of Master’s Talents in Applied Statistics.

The third stage of the seminar was chaired by Yang Li, Associate Dean of the School of Statistics at RUC. All the participants made brief discussions on discipline development, statistical education, and gave suggestions on the future development directions for the School of Statistics at RUC.
