Department Description

The School of Statistics was established in 1952 and has persistently focused on integrating theoretical research with data-driven applications. It has become one of the leaders of statistical education and research in China, and is ranked first (A+) in the national first-level academic discipline of statistics by China’s Ministry of Education. The school is also a top academic institute in the national strategy of developing first-class universities and first-class disciplines globally. Our vision is to address current and future challenges faced by China and the world through the excellence in education and research. Our mission is to develop leaders in statistics, data science, actuarial science, economics, and biostatistics.


Position Description

The School of Statistics welcomes applications from exceptional statisticians from around the world to fill positions at the various ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the areas of Probability and Statistics, Biostatistics, Risk Management and Actuarial Science, Econometrics, and Data Science. The selection criteria for the above positions are based on an assessment of research and teaching, details of which can be found below.


Basic Qualifications

A PhD in Statistics or a related discipline is required by the time of the appointment. Successful applicants should have a strong track record of research publications, possess experience of teaching at the undergraduate level, and be able to work well on a team. Applicants should be able to demonstrate their ability or potential to make contributions to the field of statistics or other related disciplines.


Additional Qualifications

For the position of Professor, in addition to the above, applicants are expected to have a strong track record of research publications in top international peer-reviewed journals, achieved internationally recognized research accomplishments, experience in successfully obtaining research funding, and to have led and managed large scale research projects. Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate their ability to the lead the development of research that can make outstanding contributions and breakthroughs in the field of statistics or other related disciplines.


Duties and Responsibilities

Appointees will be expected to develop and teach courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes; supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and theses; commit to high quality scholarly research and publications in top tier disciplinary journals; lead applications for competitive national and international research funding. In addition, appointees are expected to provide departmental and university service where required.


Salary and Social Welfare

Appointees will be offered a package that is internationally competitive and competitive to what is practiced in China. This package includes the basic salary, start-up research grants, and other allowances. Appointees will be provided with an environment that is conducive to active research, opportunities for collaboration, and ample opportunities for career development and progression. Assistance will also be provided in the arrangement of accommodation, child education, and other necessities.
