The 10th National Postgraduate Forum on Statistics Successfully Held

The 10th National Postgraduate Forum on Statistics was successfully held at Renmin University of China on November 16. Aiming to gather outstanding young statistical talents and exchange research findings on statistics in new technologies, fields, and problems, the forum sought to accelerate the cultivation of leading Chinese-characteristic statistical scholars and innovative talents, while promoting the construction of an autonomous statistical knowledge system. Distinguished guests included Vice President of Renmin University of China, Zhixiao Qiang; Director of the Institute of Statistical Science at the National Bureau of Statistics, Lü Haiqi; and President of Beijing Technology and Business University, Guo Jianhua. The forum was chaired by Li Jiaqi, Chairperson of the Graduate Student Union of the School of Statistics at Renmin University of China.

Zhixiao Qiang, in his speech, emphasized that the rapid development of big data and artificial intelligence presents unprecedented opportunities and challenges for statistical students. The forum exemplifies the School of Statistics’ proactive response to the Party and state’s important decisions on statistical work and its alignment with the trends in data science development. He encouraged all statistical students to remain true to their original aspirations, shoulder their missions, and use statistical wisdom to address China’s questions, global questions, people’s questions, and the questions of the era, contributing to the advancement of Chinese-style modernization.

Zhao Yanyun, a professor from the School of Statistics at Renmin University of China and a key initiator of the forum and the alliance, reviewed the forum’s development history. He highlighted the forum’s role in cultivating new-generation statistical talents with solid theoretical foundations, practical exploration skills, and collaborative abilities, calling it a vibrant feature of China’s statistical higher education. Looking ahead, he proposed ambitious goals for the development of data-intelligent statistics and encouraged postgraduate students to actively integrate into the modernization of statistical work in the new era.

Jiang Feiyu, a "Top Ten Papers" awardee from the 6th National Postgraduate Forum on Statistics and currently an associate professor at Fudan University’s School of Management, shared insights into his academic growth. He emphasized that the forum is not only a platform for showcasing achievements but also a hub for inspiring innovation and fostering academic exchange. He encouraged students to build connections through the forum, gain inspiration through dialogue, discover their passions, and courageously explore unknown fields.

Li Yang, Dean of the School of Statistics at Renmin University of China, announced the winners of the "Top Ten Papers" at the 10th National Postgraduate Forum on Statistics. Certificates were awarded to representatives by Lü Haiqi, Director of the Institute of Statistical Science at the National Bureau of Statistics; Guo Jianhua, Convener of the Statistics Discipline Evaluation Group under the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and President of Beijing Technology and Business University; Wang Xiaojun, Secretary-General of the National Professional Degree Education Guidance Committee for Applied Statistics and Convener of the Statistics Discipline Evaluation Group under the State Council Academic Degrees Committee; and Wang Zhaojun, Executive Dean of the School of Statistics and Data Science at Nankai University.

During the forum, postgraduate students engaged in a roundtable discussion on the theme "Research Topic Selection and Methodology for Postgraduate Research: Integration of Classical Statistics and Artificial Intelligence." The discussion explored how statistical graduate students can leverage classical statistical theories to advance artificial intelligence while utilizing AI technologies to innovate statistical methods, broadening perspectives for the training of statistical postgraduate students.

In the main forum, five "Top Ten Papers" awardees—Liang Guo (Renmin University of China), Rao Haocen (Beijing Normal University), Li Xuetong (Peking University), Wang Shitao (Sun Yat-sen University), and Li Zeyu (Fudan University)—delivered compelling reports. Their research provided novel perspectives and solutions to practical challenges, showcasing the participants’ sharp problem-solving awareness and solid academic foundation. Experts offered constructive and forward-looking suggestions on research methodologies, data collection and analysis, theoretical framework construction, and conclusion derivation. Through rigorous scientific training and presentation practice, students deepened their academic literacy and enhanced their original innovation capabilities.
